Nunavut has a Human Rights Act and the Nunavut Human Rights Tribunal, cases found here, although few are published.

Grounds of Discrimination Recognized: race, colour, ancestry, ethnic origin, citizenship, place of origin, creed, religion, age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, family status, pregnancy, lawful source of income and a conviction for which a pardon has been granted

Areas of Application: Employment, Organization and Associations, Goods, Services, Facilities or Contracts, Tenancy, Publication.

Procedure: Once a complaint has been filed, it will be reviewed to ensure its completeness, and the respondent will be given an opportunity to file a Reply of Notification. The application is then reviewed by the Tribunal to assess whether to dismiss the complaint or continue with proceedings. Mediation is encouraged if the complaint proceeds to the next stage, otherwise the matter will go to a hearing. For more up to date information, please review the Tribunal’s website here.

How to Begin a Complaint: To initiate a complaint you can contact the Nunavut Human Rights Tribunal Office to request and seek an application. For more information refer to the Tribunal’s page regarding Complaints here.

Limitation Periods: Any complaint must be made within two years of the date of the action or conduct in question.

Remedies: Some remedies the Tribunal can order include; an order for compensation, an order to stop the prohibited conduct, order a party to take a system-wide program, order an apology be made, or take any other corrective action the Tribunal feels is just.
